The ancient Greek temple could not be recognized only as a building, but mainly as an architectural form that evolved, incorporating religious context, political and social ideas and local references of ancient times. In that frame, the Greek temple changed intertemporally in order to reflect the spirit of a certain society, developing in a specific place at an exact period of time. The individuality of the Greek temple was reinforced by its unique aesthetics, the main feature of which was its polychromy.
White lighting is not sufficient to transmit this expressive wealth because it achieves a visual uniformity that demolishes every special content that is derived by each temple. The Polychromy Project aims to offer a lighting frame appropriate for communicating each temple’s unique messages and expressions. The use of the same lighting concept and the same visual vocabulary produced different results under the influence of the genius loci.
